Electrical work is one area where cutting corners can cost you dearly — in money, in a failed home sale, or in genuine danger to your family. Yet "I know a guy who does electrics" is still how a lot of work gets booked in the Upper Highway. Here's how to tell a proper electrician from a chancer.
1. Are they a registered person?
In South Africa, only a registered person (a qualified electrician registered with the Department of Employment and Labour) may legally issue a Certificate of Compliance. If someone can't certify their own work, that tells you something. Ask directly whether they're registered — a professional won't mind the question.
2. Can they issue a CoC?
Even if you're "just" having a plug added or a light moved, that work technically should be certified. An electrician who can issue compliance certificates is, by definition, working to the legal standard. One who can't is operating in a grey area.
3. Do they carry insurance?
Things occasionally go wrong, even for the best tradespeople. A professional carries liability cover so that if there's damage, you're not left out of pocket. An uninsured "handyman" doing your wiring is a risk you're quietly taking on yourself.
4. Will they quote in writing?
A proper electrician will look at the job and give you a clear, written quote before starting — separating the callout, labour, materials and any compliance work. Vague "we'll sort it out after" pricing is how small jobs balloon into big bills.
5. Are they local and contactable?
A fixed phone number, a real address or service area, a website, an active Facebook page — these are signs of a business that intends to be around next year if you need them again. Someone reachable only on a number that changes every few months is harder to hold accountable.
6. What do other locals say?
Word of mouth is gold in tight-knit areas like Hillcrest, Kloof and Gillitts. Ask neighbours, check community Facebook groups, and look for an electrician people happily recommend by name. Consistent, recent, real reviews beat a flashy advert.
Red flags to walk away from
- Offers to issue a CoC without inspecting the installation.
- Cash-only, no invoice, no paper trail.
- No written quote, or a price that keeps changing.
- Pressure to decide on the spot.
- Can't or won't confirm they're registered.
The questions to ask before you book
- Are you a registered person, and can you issue a Certificate of Compliance?
- Are you insured?
- Can I get the quote in writing?
- Which areas do you cover, and what's your callout fee?
- Can you certify the work when it's done?
A good electrician welcomes these questions. A bad one gets defensive. That reaction alone tells you most of what you need to know.
